The Dallas Morning News published something that brought me to tears today. It's a product in tabloid format (only meaning it was printed and folds like the National Enquirer) and stuffed between the Metro and Guide Live sections of the paper. The name of this publication is "Be Who You Are" and it's a celebration of National Coming Out Day. It's an entire twenty-six page publication, separate from the paper, that has stories about gay folks, gay entertainment, gay shops, gay advertisers ... gay gay gay. When I bought the paper at the single copy stand, I thumbed through it like Charlie looking for his golden fucking ticket (they didn't include it in our office copies) and when I saw it, I seriously started to cry and had a hard time stopping. It's fucking amazing. Tasteful. Refined. Real. Real gay people dealing with real issues and living real lives.|
P.S. There is a great story about the Dallas Rage included, too.
P.P.S. I know there is still a lot of work to do ... don't get me wrong ... but a publication like this in a Dallas newspaper? A Texas newspaper? Yeah. I can't help but be optimistic.
